The Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea is one of the units of the Office of Legal Affairs of the Secretariat of the United Nations. Following the entry into force of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) on 16 November 1994, the mandate of the Division was defined in United Nations General Assembly Resolution 49/28 of 6 December 1994 on the law of the sea and in Resolution 52/26 of 26 November 1997 on oceans and the law of the sea.
