This chapter deals with peace support operations (PSOs), which are in practice conducted by a number of States, although technically they may be conducted by one State alone. It focuses on PSOs that are established as a subsidiary organ of the United Nations or are otherwise subject to the effective control of the United Nations. The discussions cover the law applicable to PSOs; the regulation of PSO forces that are parties to an armed conflict by the law of armed conflict and international human rights; the regulation of PSO forces that are not parties to an armed conflict by international human rights law; the use of force for the protection of others; responsibility for the actions of an armed force authorized by the United Nations; and the protection accorded to PSO forces not parties to an armed conflict.
