Adopted on 17 JuIy 1998 by 120 of the 160 States that had taken part in the United Nations Diplomatic Conference of Plenipotentiaries on the Establishment of an International Criminal Court, 1 the Statute of the latter had been signed by 27 of them by the following day. By 31 December 2000, the closing date for signatures, the number of signatories had risen to 139. As of 1 March 2002, 52 States had ratified the Statute.
