1 Oral hearings play a key role in the proceedings before the Court of Justice of the European Union (‘CJEU’) (European Union, Court of Justice and General Court) and holding them is ‘a rule which has few exceptions’ (Rosas, 2014, 597). This is not the case in other international courts and tribunals (Hearings: International Courts and Tribunals), where the proceeding is often reduced to an exchange of written documents, to which the media and the general public may or may not have access (Public and Media Access to Courtrooms: International Courts and Tribunals)....
