Advanced Search
This page covers:
Searching for more than one term at once
What is an Advanced search?
The Advanced search searches all of the content of Oxford Public International Law (or of individual products within OPIL if you have restricted your research to the product context), but also allows you to focus your searches to the contents of specific fields or parts of documents.
An Advanced search also allows you to search for multiple terms at the same time.
Running an Advanced search
1. Open the Advanced search page by clicking Advanced Search below the Search box at the top right of the page.
2. Click the arrow and select a search area from the drop-down menu. The default is Full text.
3. Type the word or phrase you want to find into the top box.
4. Press Enter or click Search.
5. The results are displayed in the Results list. To open any of the items in the list, click on it.
Searching for more than one term at once
In an Advanced search you can search for more than one term at once. Two lines of search terms are provided by default. Click Add row to open a third search box for a third term. (You can continue to add search boxes to search for more than three terms. To remove a row, click Remove row.)
Between the input boxes is a list box displaying the default operator And. This is where you select how you want to combine your terms. The options are And, Or, Not.
Choosing a search area
A search area is the specific kind of text (e.g. Party name, Date, Book title) you can choose to search in an Advanced search. You choose your search area from the list box on the left of the search box, which is set to Full text as the default.)
Specifying a date
You can specify a specific date or date range for your search, by selecting Date in the search area typing the date or date range into the search boxes. For example, entering a date range of 2001 to 2012, returns documents from between 1st January 2001 and 31st December 2012 inclusive. To enter a single date, enter (for example) 2001 in the date box.
Choosing a content type
By default, the results show all content that matches your search term. To confine your results to a particular type of content (e.g. Case reports, Books or Encyclopedia entries), expand the content type lists and check the appropriate option(s).
Clearing search terms
To clear all your search terms, click Clear.
