This chapter focuses on Article 5(f) and Article 5(g) of the 1970 UNESCO Convention. It explains the rationale and the mechanics of the obligation of states to raise public awareness and disseminate information on lost cultural property under the Convention. While the Hague Convention focused on preserving cultural property during armed conflict and military occupation, the UNESCO Convention focuses primarily on conduct that occurs during times of peace. Article 5(f) aims to protect cultural property against illicit trade, export, and transfer of ownership by taking preventative steps. Meanwhile, Article 5(g) necessitates proper publicity for cultural objects that disappear through illegal activity. The chapter cites that heritage awareness is vital for the protection of cultural property.
