1MERCOSUR was launched in 1991 when Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay signed the Treaty of Asunción, aiming to create the Common Market of the South (in Spanish Mercado Común del Sur [‘MERCOSUR’], in Portuguese Mercado Comum do Sul [‘MERCOSUL’]).
