It is doubtful whether any specific rules for the protection of the environment during armed conflict existed before the second half of the twentieth century. As we shall see, there were numerous statements in legal instruments of different sorts that are now capable of being interpreted as relating to the environment, but it is unlikely that environmental protection was a major, or even a significant, factor in the minds of those who negotiated or drafted those texts.
