This preliminary study provides a detailed overall analysis of the Rio Declaration, its place in the history of global environmental governance, the travaux préparatoires leading to its adoption, the architecture of the instrument, and each one of its principles. The analysis of principles pays particular attention to their normative influence, mostly on subsequent treaties and soft law instruments, and to their jurisprudential relevance in international and domestic cases. The chapter concludes with some observations on the constitutional character of the Rio Declaration.
