The provision in Article 31, paragraph 3(c), of the Vienna Convention that for the purposes of interpretation account is to be taken, inter alia, of ‘any relevant rules of international law applicable in the relations between the parties’ is a survival in the final text of the Convention of what was originally proposed as a provision concerning the intertemporal principle.297 In its form as adopted, it looks like something of a lapalissade, since it would be strange if a treaty were to be interpreted in total isolation from the general body of international law....
