- Subject(s):
- Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties — Ordinary meaning (treaty interpretation and) — Object & purpose (treaty interpretation and)
This chapter analyses interpretation of treaties authenticated in two or more languages under article 33 of the Vienna Convention. Case law specifically referring to the Vienna rules is relatively sparse on the roles languages in treaty interpretation even though comparison of terms in different languages has long been routine and has become even more necessary with the increasing number of treaties authenticated in multiple languages. Routine comparisons yield up few points of general guidance in application of the Vienna rules. Hence the preparatory work assumes a greater role in explaining the text of article 33.
