I Actors, 6 International Arbitration and Courts

The title of this chapter promises an account of the role of arbitration and adjudication in international relations. That is indeed what the reader will find here but it is fair to add a warning that this is not a straightforward tale, such as is to be found in Jan HW Verzijl's and Wilhelm G Grewe's grand histories.1 Verzijl rather stresses continuity as does Karl-Heinz Ziegler. They present arbitration/adjudication as an institution linking medieval, early modern, and modern/contemporary times. This is often done in popular presentations of the subject too....
