Lassa Oppenheim (his birth name was Lahsa) was born in Windecken near Frankfurt-am-Main in 1858 as son of a Jewish horse trader. His father acquired considerable wealth, which enabled his family to move to Frankfurt and to live off private means. Lassa received an excellent education. In 1878 he started studying law in Göttingen, where he studied Roman law with Rudolph von Jhering. He took courses in psychology with Wilhelm Wundt, and in metaphysics with Hermann Lotze.
