Emer de Vattel (1714–1767), was born on 25 April 1714 in the province of Neuchâtel, the son of protestant refugees.1 In 1758, he published The Law of Nations or the Principles of Natural Law Applied to the Conduct and to the Affairs of Nations and of Sovereigns.2 The work enjoyed considerable success, much to the amazement of the author himself.
