Christian Wolff (1679–1754) was educated in Jena and Leipzig, where he taught until he was called to be professor of philosophy in the new University of Halle (1707), which he was forced by the Prussian king to leave in 1723. After seventeen years as professor in Marburg, he was recalled to Halle by Frederick the Great. He was by then the most influential philosopher in the German-speaking world and had considerable influence in the wider Enlightenment world.
