The right to life is obviously fundamental and for that reason the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), the American Convention on Human Rights (ACHR), and the Arab Charter have designated it as non-derogable.1 These treaties also specify that the right to life ‘shall be protected by law’.2 Unlike the prohibition of torture, the right to life is not absolute but the limitations are contained within each provision.
