Over the last two decades, jurists, historians, and social scientists have been investigating the issue of collective violence with unprecedented sensitivity. This is largely influenced, in my opinion, by a number of historical events: ethnic cleansing in Bosnia; the Rwandan genocide; and the widespread atrocities in many African countries, particularly in Sudan (Darfur).
