This chapter discusses select issues concerning the economic administration of occupied territories. Since economic administration, in essence, encapsulates almost every aspect of government—from antitrust to pensions, from banking to privatization—the chapter focuses on select issues that have traditionally been at the fulcrum of the concern of the law of occupation. It first discusses taxation and contributions. It then moves to analyze policies affecting international trade such as customs, liberalization, and economic integration—emphasizing the tensions between such policies and the concern that they aim to promote economic annexation. The chapter ends with an analysis of the regulation of currency in occupied territories.
