This chapter examines the general aspects of the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), as well as its provisions on patent rights. It also looks at the protection of intellectual property rights in the broader international context. The TRIPS Agreement provides for national treatment and most-favoured-nation treatment. It applies to copyright and related rights, trademarks, geographical indications, industrial designs, patents, layout designs (topographies) of integrated circuits, the protection of undisclosed information, and the control of anti-competitive practices in contractual licences. The TRIPS also aims at the effective enforcement of intellectual property rights, including provisional measures of protection.
