This chapter examines three interventions by Israel into Gaza: Operation Cast Lead (2008-9), Operation Pillar of Defense (2012) and Operation Protective Edge (2014). It sets out the facts and context of each of these three interventions, the legal positions of the main protagonists, and the reaction that each of the interventions received. The chapter moves on to assess the legality of the interventions and also whether they have any precedential value, in particular for the right of self-defence and the so-called ‘accumulation of events’ theory.
