The stated purposes of the United Nations, listed in Article 1 of the Charter and to be read against the background of the preambular provisions, are centred on the maintenance of peace, the settlement of disputes, and the promotion of social, economic, and humanitarian welfare. In the Charter these are a seamless web. There is full recognition in the Charter that, if disputes are not settled, the peace may not be maintained; and that injustice and economic and social deprivation provide the breeding ground for instability and international terrorism.
